Lapidary Center Overview and Sign-up
The club lapidary center has all the equipment you need to make beautiful cabochons and other carved and polished display pieces. We also have and ample supply of excellent material at very low prices. First time lapidarists get their material free.
The lapidary center supervisors as well as other experienced members are eager to teach you everything you need to know. Come try lapidary at our lap center and you'll go home with a beautiful finished piece that you created!
What is a cabochon?
If you visit the lapidary center you will make a cabochon (or cab for short). The word cabochon is derived from the french caboche meaning "head", "knob", or "small dome".
Cabbing, the process of making a cab, typically involves cutting slabs of rough rock into various shapes, doming, and then polishing to acheive a glossy finish.
The cabs are then set by a metalsmith to fashion jewelry including rings, bracelets, pendants, and more.
